Kids speak out on student engagement:
To engage my students now, I am having them work on solving problems and discussing meaning of definitions / concepts in groups. (collaboration) I try to engage my students by using problems that they can relate to and they have interest in. I use pictures and multimedia to bring in thing that students will see in the real world into my classroom. I want to try to let them explore the topics more. I can commit to… Working with peers - because I love when I have students talk and discuss problems and methods for solving problems. Plus when students help other students, they learn the material that much better. Connecting the real world to the work we do/project-based learning - I want to keep connecting stuff that is covered in class to something that students will see in the real world. Bring in visuals - at my current school we have access to smartboards and projectors, so bringing in visuals and multimedia is very easy and the students get more from the lesson when I do. Instagram ELE Challenge: Students get interaction with others from different cultures and different parts of the world. It introduces students to others that they might not have any contact with otherwise. Students can be made aware of other cultures that they would have no exposure to otherwise. The teacher using this idea promote collaboration amongst students in a global setting and has them using new technologies to do this. This helps develop students abilities to communicate with others of different cultures and heritages, and keeps our students adaptable to the changing technologies that they will see in the workplace. Instagram Scavenger Hunt I love this idea and the use of technology, but don’t see it being used in my math classroom. I might be able to do something for extra credit where when students are outside of school, if they see something that relates to what we are talking about, they can take a picture of it and send it to me with a description of the math that they are seeing. 3 ways colleges use instagram I like how colleges are using instagram as a means of self-promotion and interaction with the community/students. I would like to see more meaningful use of IG tho. I think there are lots of college classes that could benefit by using IG to create learning opportunities. IG is a great tool to increase student engagement and provide opportunities they wouldn’t have otherwise. 3/13/2015 05:57:11 am
I really like your idea of challenging students to find math in their everyday lives and to share it with you via Instagram. You could share these pictures with the rest of the class and create so many meaningful discussions! It goes right along with your commitment to "connecting the real world to the work we do" as well!
