Visitors and Residences

The video talked about the difference between a visitor and a resident online. Before I viewed this video I thought of myself as being very tech savvy and having an online presence, but now I’m started to second guess that. Starting the class and creating the accounts to get an online presence is making me start to think that I need to develop it. Dr. White talks about how most people just check in and take from the internet when they need it. I use youtube all the time to figure out how to make things, cook things and build things. The last thing that I looked up was how to build a bike surfboard rack. After I used the information I didn’t stick around and discuss like Dr. White suggest when you are a resident online. Personally I feel that being a resident online is really a time suck. Having discussions and creating an online presence is something that takes a lot of time and everything that you say is out there for the world to see and view. Its a little scary to think that my future employers could see something that I commented on when I was younger and maybe said something that I now disagree with. I’m glad that I’m an online visitor, I hate the fact that everything is so visible for everyone and nothing is private. I will stay an online visitor.

Hey Sean,

I drew different conclusions than you did after watching the video. I decided that I should become more of a resident in my professional life. However, I too find it scary that future employers will be able to view my past comments. I know I have said things in the past that I would be embarrassed of now. If we continue to contribute to social platforms though, I believe that the arc of our evolution will also be visible. Future employers will be able to see how we changed opinions.

Hi Sean,

I also identify as more of a visitor and understand how being a resident could be time consuming. I guess the best way to become a resident would be to dedicate 10 minutes a day (if you can find 10 whole extra minutes) to building an online presence. I love how you use youtube videos to learn. They can be such a good resource!

Hey Sean,
I really enjoyed reading your post! It was interesting because most of the blogs I have read about this video seemed to have had the opposite effect on people. They thought they might be classified as a visitor and then came to realize they are residents. I appreciate your honesty!
Thanks,
Megan

Hello Sean,
When I read your blog I was reminded of how I felt about social media in the past. It has been an extremely difficult transition to go from never using Twitter to trying to check it at least once everyday. I have transitioned to using social media because many of the educators in Vista Unified use social media and I feel that I have to be up to date with what is happening in VUSD. If it was not for that I probably would not be on Twitter as much as I am. I really enjoyed how honest you were!
Best,
Edgar Ayala

Hey Sean,

I totally agree with you after reading your blog. I feel technology has been beneficial however there are consequences to frequent data and access. Today, everything is posted on social media ASAP and there's hardly any privacy anymore. The other day I saw a high school guy go up to some girls in the hall and whip out his phone and took a selfie with them without asking. Who knows what he did with the photo but likely posted on Twitter or SnapChat and the privacy is gone. I still haven't transitioned to using too much Social media, my CSUSM Twitter is evidence enough and I've only logged onto the site twice and both were during our Monday sessions.....
